Creating new global standards for environmental responsibility

We strongly believe in improving standards within the industry to ensure biodegradibility does not create microplastics or harm the natural environment in any way, at all. We therefore recognise that clearer definitions and testing standards are needed to substantiate claims around biodegradability and compostability performance. Polymateria is committed to a rigorous scientific and evidence-based approach that will make ineffective technologies a thing of past.

Our own internal standard is an amalgamation of global best practice which we underpin with third-party certification and data. We share this approach in an open source fashion with all leading standards bodies such as ASTM (de facto global), BSI (UK) and KEBS (Kenya) – and many others to create a new global standard established on leading-edge science and evidence.

Considering our impact from start to finish

In order to ensure absolutely no negative impact to the environment, the Biotransformation process includes additional tests, beyond those advised by the ASTM protocol working across and in between all three tiers of measurement.

Testing and evaluation by independent third-party testing labs

  • Tier 1 phase tested under an augmented version of “de-facto” ASTM D6954.
  • Stringent Tier 1 Pass/Fail criteria to ensure no microplastic.
  • Eco-toxicity tests on residual post Tier 1 material (OECD standards).
  • 90% CO₂ conversion rate criteria to ensure complete biodegradation.
