
A BREAKTHROUGH COLLABORATION BETWEEN SCHÜLKE, NITTO, INDORAMA VENTURES AND POLYMATERIA HAS RESULTED IN THE LAUNCH OF AN INNOVATIVE BIODEGRADABLE WASH MITT DESIGNED FOR THE PATIENT CARE SECTOR.
- The newly launched wash mitt introduces a new design to the market, one that considers its end of use. The wash mitt has been launched in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Spain.
- The wash mitt is made up of cellulose and a non-woven polypropylene layer which previously could not biodegrade but with Polymateria’s revolutionary Biotransformation technology incorporated this layer is now also biodegradable.

Schülke, in collaboration with Nitto, Indorama Ventures and Polymateria has launched an innovative biodegradable wash mitt designed to support more sustainable patient care without compromising performance, hygiene, or user experience.
The new wash mitt, now launched in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Spain, represents a significant advancement in disposable patient care products. Developed through a four-way collaboration between leading experts in healthcare, materials science and manufacturing, the product is the first of its kind to combine high-performance functionality with a biodegradable design enabled through advanced material innovation.
At the heart of the innovation is a unique three-layer composite structure consisting primarily of cellulose, with the remaining 24% of the material layer made from non-woven polypropylene containing biotransformation technology. The result is a wash mitt that delivers the comfort, strength and performance healthcare professionals expect, while supporting improved environmental outcomes at the end of its useful life.

Unlike conventional disposable wash mitts, the new product incorporates biotransformation technology developed by Polymateria. This technology enables the non-woven polypropylene component to transform into a bio-available wax and fully biodegrade in the open terrestrial environment if it escapes the waste stream. This non-woven layer meets the BSI PAS 9017 standard from the British Standards Institution. The technology is designed to address the challenge of persistent plastic waste while maintaining product performance during use.

A further breakthrough is the product’s manufacturing process. The wash mitt is believed to be the first biodegradable ultrasonically bonded wash mitt on the market, combining advanced bonding technology with biodegradable material design. This delivers a product that is both functionally superior and environmentally progressive, setting a new benchmark for the patient care industry.
